Trichotillomania and Shame
Many people who suffer from trichotillomania or TTM (an urge to pull out their hair) are ashamed of their urge to pull and the affects it has on their appearance.
Although TTM can be an issue for both men and women, it is women who predominantly suffer from it. It isĀ a life of suffering and anxiety too. TTM means that you have to meticulously plan your events for work and socially to cover up from others your TTM urges and its results.
Tricho is not something that anyone chooses to do. It is an urge that can constantly gnaw at someone to pull out a hair. The person than experiences some relief once the hair has been pulled. However sooner or later the tricho sufferer will want to pull again and want to experience that sense of relief again.
The shame comes from the need to cover up the results of hair-pulling. This means that large parts of the scalp have extremely thin patches of hair or are bald.
Shame is not a useful emotion for anyone. It leads to low self esteem and confidence and a contunation of hiding away.
If you are reading this, my guess is that you are fed up with the cover ups, and restrictions to your lifestyle. Recognising that life can be better is the first step to ending your hair pulling.
